Read This: The Future of the US

Right before Christmas, New York Times columnist Thomas L. Freidman penned one of the best columns I've ever read. He contrasts his experience in China with his experience back in the US, and decries our investment priorities.

It's a short, simple newspaper column, but it's an important piece that you should read. So go, read already!

Comic Tuesday

Doctor Fun

Doctor Fun was the very first webcomic. It ran 520 strips from 1993-2006. It's a bizarre little comic, similar to Bizarro in many ways. Here's the archive, have fun!

Villain of the Month: Chernabog

Chernabog

I found one of my favorite t-shirts today. It features Chernabog, the demon-like creature from the sequence 'Night on Bald Mountain' in the 1940 movie 'Fantasia'. Officially designated a villain by Disney, I believe that Chenabog is less a villain than a primal force of nature. In other words, he's not evil, he's just misunderstood.

Chernabog

Based on the Black God of Slavic mythology, Bela Lugosi was the live model on which the animated Chernabog was based. This is a great site dedicated to the character, if you'd like more information and pictures. I wonder where I can get one of those neat sculptures?

The Majesty of Colors

This is an interesting little game. You can find five different endings, depending upon choices you make in the game. 8-bit graphics and a limiting interface are part of the fun. Check out 'I Fell in Love With the Majesty of Colors'.

Calling All Mystery fans

"We just wanna have fun..." About two years ago I had an idea and although I could not incorporate it at the time, it stuck in my brain. It could be because I love mysteries.. My favorite authors include: Jeffery Deaver (have read all his books except the scout mysteries and I am catching up on them.) Patterson, Kirk Mitchell, PD James, and JA Jance being some of my favorites. I also find myself really enjoying adventures and my fave by far is Janet Evanovich. I have hooked a large number of my customers on these authors especially Janet Evanovich which is fun to read and well makes me laugh histerically!

Okay, so my idea was this... let's do a mystery club! The idea is to meet once a week or once a month or any combination thereof.. we discuss new mysteries, new writers and we share ideas for our own mystery. We can do a group mystery (just an idea) in book form. Once a month or once every other month we can do a mystery dinner hosted by the mystery group and prepared by Rockhopper. We can have fun playing a variety of mystery games and well we can just have some fun. We can even do some mystery readings (open Mic style).

This is something that I think sounds like a lot of fun and I am sure there are enough mystery fans out there that we could have a great group and we could create our own fun with Rockhoppers Mystery group!

Rockhoppers will hold a meeting for this group Saturday January 10 at 10:00AM. If you are unable to make that then please give me a call. There must be at least 6 other people interested in this group for it to form. In the meantime here is a few warmup games you might enjoy.

Read This: The Smoky God

The Smoky God

Back to the Sacred Texts archive for this one, an early science-fiction story of the hollow earth genre. The Smoky God has nice illustrations, and is much more accessible than it's predecessor, Symzonia: Voyage of Discovery, also available at Sacred Texts.
