There Will be Blood

Wow. There Will be Blood. Definitely. I really enjoyed this movie, Paul Thomas Anderson is probably my favorite director. He always explores the dynamics of people in stressful, unusual circumstances, and gets so much out of his actors.

This movie begins in the late 1800's with a man digging a mine. The film continues without any dialog for a good long time. Very unusual, gritty, and evocative. The film is based on the Upton Sinclair novel "Oil!", which, when you think of the size and scope of a novel, is quite the challenge.

A long movie, with tremendously dramatic scenes, and truly amazing acting -- particularly by Daniel Day-Lewis. The score is nice, and scrub-land has never looked so beautifully bleak and majestic. The movie really needed to be a couple hours longer to fully make sense, but that's what you get when you try to cram a whole big novel into a few hours.

Ultimately, the movie doesn't quite rise to the level of a double shot, because of the jumps in the story, but at least all the jumps are forwards.... Single Shot.
