Rockhoppers will be Hoppin' in May!

So here we are entering May. I am so excited! To begin with.. On Wednesdays this month we have a comedian who is trying to put together a comedy night, Wednesdays here at Rockhoppers. The Park and Rec department is sponsoring an altered book group on Friday AM and on Thursdays they are sponsoring an acting class. We have live music every Saturday evening, Shawn Snyder who came and visited from Boston in January, is coming back to play the Rockhopper (he is scheduled on a Sunday!) and Clinton Days at the end of the month promises to be a HUGE event this year.I will post more on that closer to the date.

Closer to this date however is another VERY exciting event that has been scheduled at the Rockhopper. Thanks to Carolyn Tamler, we are hosting Justin Ruben from the National Organization of MoveOn.org. Justin Ruben is the Organizing Director at MoveOn.org, where he oversees MoveOn's campaign work day-to-day. In 2006 he ran Call for Change, MoveOn's successful get-out-the-vote program, where over 100,000 volunteers made 7 million phone calls to voters in swing congressional districts. He has worked for 11 years as an organizer on labor, environmental justice, toxics, fair trade, and other progressive issues. He grew up in New Haven, CT, where, before joining the MoveOn team, he worked as an organizer for what was then the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union (HERE). Justin earned a Masters of Environmental Management at Yale University, focused on the politics of environmental problems. He has written for Sierra Magazine, In These Times, Social Policy, and other publications.

The MoveOn family of organizations brings real Americans back into the political process. With over 3.3 million members across America – from carpenters to stay-at-home moms to business leaders – we work together to realize the progressive promise of our country. MoveOn is a service – a way for busy but concerned citizens to find their political voice in a system dominated by big money and big media.

The MoveOn family of organizations is made up of a couple of different pieces. MoveOn.org Civic Action, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, formerly known just as MoveOn.org, primarily focuses on education and advocacy on important national issues. MoveOn.org Political Action, a federal PAC, formerly known as MoveOn PAC, mobilizes people across the country to fight important battles in Congress and help elect candidates who reflect our values. Both organizations are entirely funded by individuals.

Every member has a voice in choosing the direction for both MoveOn.org Political Action and MoveOn.org Civic Action. Using our ActionForum software, you can propose priorities and strategies. Both organizations also take the initiative to organize quick action on other timely issues that our members care about. For more info. go to MoveOn.org
